The Clery Transparency and Accountability Network (CTAN) partnered with WBD to develop an AI-powered University Crimes Aggregation & Metrics Engine—a transformative system designed to capture, store, and analyze campus crime data from universities across the United States, with special emphasis on university crime incidents. This initiative supports the ongoing modernization of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), aiming to solve long-standing challenges in crime data collection and standardization. University crime data exists in diverse formats, layouts, and time periods, making it difficult to aggregate, parse, and interpret effectively. CTAN’s mission, with WBD’s technology at its core, is to build a centralized, accurate crime database that can deliver reliable, actionable insights to improve campus safety nationwide.
Universities today report crime data in fragmented ways—using PDFs, spreadsheets, and other formats that vary widely in layout and content. This inconsistency, compounded by manual data manipulatcion, introduces a significant risk of errors and omissions. Currently, no centralized system exists to collect and manage crime data from universities cleanly and comparably, making it nearly impossible to analyze national trends or maintain accurate data integrity. The lack of standardization, especially in tracking university crime incidents, hinders this area of growing concern. Without a structured, scalable solution, institutions and oversight bodies are left with incomplete, error-prone records that limit transparency and accountability.
In collaboration with CTAN, WBD developed an AI-powered University Crimes Aggregation and Metrics Engine, focusing on building a robust, centralized repository and delivering precise, deduplicated crime data. The MVP is engineered to streamline every stage of the data workflow—from acquisition to comparison. Key features include:
The MVP is designed to launch with crime data from approximately 58 representative universities, with flexibility to scale and incorporate additional file types and institutions as the project evolves. The solution is built to achieve at least 99% data extraction and categorization accuracy, backed by rigorous quality assurance processes.
